What Is Orotic Acid And How Does It Relate To Vitamin B13
Orotic Acid is the compound that used to be known as Vitamin B13 because of the growth promoting properties and other vitamin-like properties it was observed to bestow on lab rats. Even though these days orotic acid / Vitamin B13 is no longer considered a vitamin nutritional studies in humnas and other animals revealed that Orotic Acid does partially compensate for Vitamin B12 defiency. This is what is known as the Vitamin B12 sparing effect of Orotic Acid.Orotic Acid also has an effect on folate (Vitamin B9) metabolism.
In fact much of Orotic Acid's apparent vitamin-like qualities are really as a result of it's indirect influence on other true vitamins. Accordingly Orotic Acid plays a role in DNA and RNA synthesis.
Orotic Acid is stable and undamaged by heat and since it is a water soluble "vitamin" is not prone to overdose toxicity. Vitamin B13 is found in root vegetables like carrots, beet as well as whey.
